Features of Russian cuisine

Hi, comrades!

Russian national cuisine is very original. Russia is a multinational country. Historically, it was connected with Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Therefore, it united different cultures. Now it is difficult to understand what is originally Russian, and what has been borrowed from other peoples.

But modern Russian cuisine began to form around the 17th century, when Tsar Peter I opened a window to Europe (as we say). Then in Russia there was a potato, spices. At the same time the tsar spread vodka. Formation was completed approximately in the 19th century.

Russian cuisine is distinguished by a variety of snacks, love for bread, pancakes, pies, cereals, soups. Even the Russians traditionally ate fatty foods, because in Russia the climate is cold and the people needs more calories to make up the reserves of vital energy.

Foreigners are surprised at how we can eat some Russian dishes. They seem disgusting to them.

For example, a "Kholodets". This is jelly from meat, herbs and spices.

If I did not live in Russia, then it would be disgusting even to look at it, but the "Kholodets" is very tasty. Just foreigners are used to that jelly should be sweet. In fact, it is very tasty. The "Kholodets" has a subtle taste. It is simultaneously salty, sour and has a bright aftertaste.

Okroshka

from here

It's such a cold soup that is made from boiled potatoes, carrots, eggs, sausages. And also from fresh cucumbers, green onions, dill (Russian herb for different dishes). Broth is made from water with "smetana" (like Greek yogurt). Be sure to add salt, black pepper and vinegar.
An alien can most likely become ill from the kind of soup, but this is one of my favorite dishes. This is delicious!

Pancakes ("Bleene")

from here

Pancakes are something that any person should like. They are different from American pancakes. Russian pancakes are very thin, have a neutral taste, so they can be eaten with sweet and salty fillings. They are eaten with caviar, ham, cheese, "varene" (homemade jam), honey.

Dumplings ("Pelmeni")

from here

Dumplings resemble Italian tortellini. Minced wrapped in a thin dough. They are either cooked or fried. They like to eat with sour cream ("smetana" (like Greek yogurt)).

Marinated cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms

from here

Marinated vegetables and mushrooms are used as a snack for alcohol and as an addition to the main meal. Their traditional cooking is different from what you know. The taste is slightly different.

Russian salads are a separate topic of conversation.

It seems they put everything they found in the fridge and added a lot of mayonnaise.
A foreigner it will seem very fat, but it's delicious)

I told you about the basics of Russian cuisine. It is very diverse and unusual. In the future I will show some recipes.

Good luck to all and sorry for my English!

Sort:

I will admit there are some strange items in there. But I always love trying new foods! I'd like to try that savory gelatin item. Its unusual, but it looks very interesting!

Also don't worry about your English. It is better than many Americans. :)

Thank you very much) By the way, I highly recommend this gelatin)
