WWF ''Environmental Concerns'' Coincide with US Interests over Nord Stream II

 Desperate times call for desperate measures

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) have recently urged German Chancellor Angela Merkel to cease the construction of Nord Stream II citing ‘’environmental concerns’’. [1] These concerns seemingly follow a pattern on the world chessboard and somehow, for reasons unknown, coincide with the interests of the United States. Obvious opponents of the project include John McCain and Marco Rubio that have in the past, together with eight other U.S senators, sent a worrying letter to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. They projected their worries carefully, urging him to reconsider the project and citing European ‘’energy diversification’’ concerns as the main culprit. 

The symbiotic trade relationship between Europe and Russia have always been concerning for the US and, after the Neo-Conservatives lost their foothold in Ukraine, they have started undertaking increasingly desperate measures to repel this Russian energy invasion. The new measure comes in the form of the WWF as it has sought to coincidentally honour its fundamental principle in ‘’protecting the environment’’. Protecting the environment has become an increasingly selective action as this strongly-worded mantra hasn’t always fit their NGO-based agenda. Does anyone remember Pandaleaks in 2012? 

Considering the enslavement of this NGO by green-washing corporate businesses, this sounds absolutely awful. The WWF is an NGO in the strictest sense of the term, but in a world where corporations run governments and when they have in the past been accused of ‘’selling their soul’’[2] to these very corporations, it cannot simply pick and choose when to leap in on these geopolitical battles without looking like a dog with a Stars-and-stripes themed muzzle on. Dogs, by their instinctive nature, tend to bark at all threats around them, not just at a select few targets. That is unless they have been conditioned to do so.

Powerhouse corporations such as Coca Cola, Shell, Monsanto among others, have been greenlighted to continue their businesses as usual with their devastating practices being an actual threat to the environment. Monsanto is perhaps the one that stands out the most and making the connection to this case is rather easy. Once the Neo-Cons lose the allies of the upgraded Nord Stream project, they’ll have very little leverage in the Monsanto debate in Europe, thanks to tremendous Russian efforts to send it away from its borders when Putin signed the anti-GMO law in 2016. 

Even though they were recently outlawed from the European Parliament, Monsanto are far from over in their fight to bring their bundle of mutant goods over to the European continent. The priorities are obviously important for this NGO. WWF allowing Monsanto to spread its gene contamination and herbicide use has been given the all-honourable stamp while Gazprom and its partners setting up a pipeline with huge economic potential brings ‘’destruction to the environment’’. While the impact of WWF’s concerns for the project are yet to be seen, I hardly think it’s going to be more concerning than the hawk and his entourage attempting to shut down a project that has been deemed favourable by most countries that have the highest benefit to cost relationship, excluding of course the countries that want to make a political statement to please its masters across the Atlantic.
