Russia and the sunflowers

In Russia, a plant of sunflower was brought from North America, Peter 1, and grew it as an ornamental plant. Later, they learned how to make oil from sunflower seeds. And oil has gained immense popularity in Russia, since sunflower oil was allowed to be consumed during fasting.

But the special popularity in Russia acquired in the early 20th century. When collective farms and sunflowers were established, they were used as sunflower oil.
