I didn't quite break my 20-minute goal with today's Parkrun, but I did set a new PB and came very close with a time of 20 minutes & 14 seconds! This week I ramped up my weekly mileage from around 20km to 30km - running ~6km on Tuesday, ~13km on Wednesday and ~6km on Thursday; I'm very happy that I was able to recover from my long run, especially, and still be in pretty good condition for today's effort.
I still had quite a bit left in the tank in the latter stages, running the last 300m or so at a pace of 3:00m/km, so I need to plan my pacing a lot more if I do want to break that 20-minute mark. That being said, I'm sure that if I wasn't fatigued from my runs during the week, I could potentially have done broken it Today!
I have three exams on successive days on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week so it might be difficult to run 30km again but I will try my hardest, and giving myself two rest days before Norwich Parkrun next Saturday might be wise with my goal in mind.
Everyone started off pretty fast, but I knew that going too hard at the start is what has limited me in the past, so I went at a steady pace of 3:59m/km for the first kilometre. I slipped a little under the 4:00m/km goal in the second kilometre by 3 seconds, and then really struggled through the 3rd and 4th kilometres with paces of 4:14m/km and 4:12m/km respectively. I had a very strong finish, with the last kilometre being my fastest at a pace of 3:49m/km.
The 4:14m/km & 4:12m/km paces for the 3rd and 4th kilometres are disappointing because I know the extra effort I need to put in to get those closer to 4:00m/km is actually pretty small. I have done a little thinking about why the 3rd and 4th kilometres are the hardest for me, and I've realised that it's when I overtake a significant chunk of all the runners who are running at a considerably slower pace. Running past people moving slowly makes you think you're moving a lot faster, and I think that is what's automatically slowing me down a little. I'll keep that in mind for next week's effort.
