A changing of the guard

in #running6 years ago

It had to happen eventually. I saw it coming a while ago but I guess I just didn’t want to face the truth. My running shoes were past their prime and needed to be replaced.

They have done a fair amount of miles, and kilometres too, and despite carrying me through two marathons and countless hours of training, they still didn’t look that bad.

But now the smell is more than I can bear when putting them on. I can smell my footfalls as a run down the road, and that’s never a good thing. Sure I could put them in the washing machine, but then I’d have to spend the rest of the day picking bits of shoes out of the mechanism.

The final nail in the coffin came a few days ago.

I ran my 10km circuit and felt good doing it, just taking it easy. Shortly afterwards my foot began to hurt, a lot. Like the soles was badly bruised. It happened again on the treadmill a day or so after that, and that’s when I knew for certain that my poor shoes had done their dash and were destined for the bin.

You can see the top section is all worn away where my feet used to knock into each other (before I fixed that problem). The soles are coming off, and it was just a matter of time before they fell apart completely.

So my old Asics are in the bin, and I have a brand new pair of New Balance 860v8s.

I’ve run with them once (this morning on a treadmill) to see what they are like, and they seem pretty good. The forefoot seems a bit less padded, or maybe it’s because my feet are still sore, but the rest of the shore fits well and I feel light running in them.

And that’s what I plan to do a lots of from now on – running in them.

Sort:

I dread buying running shoes. I've had a gait analysis on two occasions and purchase shoes based on the result and advice and both pairs ended up giving me problems with lower leg and foot pain.

Many moons ago I tried some barefoot shoes and they were fantastic but I can't find another pair after wearing them out.

I've been using some Nike Air Max shoes recently and they're comfy but a little heavy - I'm more of a fashion shoe I think than one that's meant for actual factual running. They'll do for now thought - I'm trying to put off the great shoe hunt for as long as possible!

I did the gait analysis things as well, which shortlisted these shoes.

I then tried a few pairs on and these just felt great as soon as I stood up.

As you can tell from the fact I haven't bought new (road) running shoes for 15 years, I'm also not a fan of shoe shopping.

I've got some Vibrim five finger shoes and they are great for running and in, especially in the summer. And I'm looking forward to getting back into them.

I think having a variety of shoes types is really useful for bomb-proofing your legs etc.

Nice new ones. Curious as to where you kept your old ones inbetween running if they smelled that bad. ;)

hehe in the washouse out by the back door. It's a good way to deter burglars ;-)

Haha, who needs a dog.

ME!!!! hehehe

I'd swap my old running shoes for a puppy any day. ;-)

Good investment 😉

I think so. Let's see how they do after a good long road run ;-)

how's your Dad? its been 12 days since he posted last....

I think he's ok. They have been on holiday on Oz. I think they got back yesterday, so he should be back writing bullshit again soon.

Good to see you back :)
I can smell those yucky trainers, about time you bought new ones.

I'm not surprised you can smell them all the way over there! They are currently in a bin out at the roadside waiting to be picked up, and I can still smell them!

You will get charged for adding another hole to the ozone later. Your feet need condemning lol

Your feet need condemning

You're not the first to tell me that! hehehe

You could always wash them haha

But then everything that went into the washing machine afterwards would come out smelling of shoe - they were THAT bad hehehe

I meant wash your feet LOL
