Why the toilet seats as trophies?

We, like many HHH chapters around the world have a wide variety of props that we hand out for jobs not-so-well done during out events. These normally make their way around to the usual core members and they are not meant to be congratulatory at all. They are meant to make you a laughing stock.

You don't need to have done anything particularly bad to get awarded this. In fact, you could actually be guilty of doing too many things correctly - which is also frowned upon. Take this guy here for example, he is what we call an FRB or "front running bastard." He is consistently near the front of the pack and make all the other people who are not as fit as he is look bad. Therefore the favor is returned in the form of various toilet seat necklaces.

Whenever we do these things it is always meant in jest and not to hurt the feelings of the people that are on the ice or even anyone that is watching. You have to have a certain happy-go-lucky mentality in order to get along in the Hash and if you are ever given an award just accept it and move on, perhaps argue that you agree that you should be punished. The worst thing you can do is refuse to wear it or kick up a fuss. We are all just silly man-children anyway and none of this stuff is actually dirty, there is a fantastic chance it has never been used.

Over the years I have been adorned with many a toilet seat and I consider it a great honor any time that it happens. If you have it presented to you, I suggest you treat it as the same. After all, someone had to lug a big plastic box filled with garbage in it in order for you to receive it in the first place!
