Gentleman Rules

in #rules6 years ago

The idea of a “gentleman” has changed over and over again over the years because of the historical, political and national changes.

However, it has always been associated with a classic and attractive appearance, someone with a remarkable intelligence and, of course, good manners.

Here are a few rules that gentlemen had to follow in 1875, that should be followed in the present, too.

  • Even if you’re absolutely sure that your opponent is saying wrong things, that don’t match with your vision, stay calm, have an intelligent and impersonal discussion, as if their opinion matters.

  • You have all the rights to have political preferences, but you should never talk about them! It’s better if your opponent believes that you’re a bad politician, rather than a pseudo-gentleman.

  • Never interrupt anybody, even if they are wrong. You have no right to correct anybody if they didn’t ask you to do so.

  • The rudest thing you could do is constantly checking the time. It doesn’t matter how bored you are. Once you have accepted to have a conversation with somebody, you have to do it right.

  • Always be polite, honest, and don’t act like you’re superior. Don’t raise your voice on no one, don’t talk too much and too loud trying do prove something.

  • Talk shortly, clearly and on point. Too many details make communication harder.

  • Avoid any subject that refers to someone who isn’t there. Gossip isn’t for gentlemen.

  • Speak your maternal language correctly, respect every written and verbal grammatical rule. At the same time, avoid too - formal language because it creates a distance between you and the person you are speaking with.

  • Don’t tend to be exclusive, profound and distinct, by avoiding fun and communication with other people. Try to act in conformity with the person you’re with, as long as their actions match your values and the ethical code of a gentleman.

I am not always a gentleman, but I am trying to be one, even if it's hard sometimes. Good luck!
