  1. Bitcoin Whales Move Nearly Two Billion Dollars For Next to Nothing - In one transaction, someone transferred 107,848 BTC ($900,000,000) with a fee of 0.02 BTC ($166). In a second transfer, 112,027 BTC (933,000,000) was moved for just 0.00046743 BTC ($3.89). The article argues that this demonstrates the low cost and high speeds that are designed into the protocol, and suggests that the banks who argue against bitcoin demonstrate that they still don't understand it.

  2. AMC Theatres launches streaming service in latest blow to Netflix - Initially, the new streaming service will be part of the AMC Stubs product and will offer access to about 2,000 movies from all of the major studios. Later, it will be extended to add, "films from AMC Networks’s IFC Films and RLJE Films." Customers can access the films through the "the AMC Theatres mobile app, Roku and SmartTVs." More devices and services will be added later. The product currently serves 20 million households, and CEO, Adam Aron, says that the company is uniquely positioned to promote individual movies with a great deal of personalization.

  3. CME Says Bitcoin Futures Gaining Interest From Big Investors - According to CME, contracts have increased by 61% year over year in large part due to the entry of institutional investors. The average daily trading is 5,534 contracts with a value of 27,670 BTC or $289 million. Their futures trading debuted in 2017, around the same time as a similar platform from Cboe Global Markets. The Cboe platform folded earlier this year.

  4. Undisclosed Debt Sustainability - Harvard's Laura Alfaro and Fabio Kanczuk, from the World Bank Group, coauthored a working paper on the topic of debt sustainability outside of "Paris club" nations. They find that increasing transparency of non-traditional debt arrangements would lead to increased welfare gains for recipient countries, but the arrangements would also be less sustainable. They also find that the effect is larger with larger debts. This area of research may be important because of China's increasing presence as a lender to low and middle-income countries.

  5. STEEM Can AI be a fair judge in court? Estonia thinks so - Citing a report in Wired, @mauromar reports that Estonia and China have both taken steps to implement AI as "virtual judges" for particular court cases that are simple enough that the evidence can be presented in digital format. @mauromar also points out that this capability brings serious ethical and social questions to the forefront, and suggess that society should start discussing them.
