Microlite20: Gameplay Review

in #rpg8 years ago

What is Microlite20?

Microlite20 is your typical tabletop Roleplaying game (RPG). Currently a Patreon project developed by Seth Drebitko, M20 is based somewhat from the big Dungeons and Dragons, and Chainmail before that. This called a d20 roleplaying game, where the player is mainly in control of a 20 sided die, this will determine many things from movement, stat count and allocation. D&D takes the player into long constructive stories and narrative to form their character or avatar

The Game

We were asked to test M20 for our University subject "Games Design and Technologies" each team was asked to have individual games and parties. I was in a party of three and I was keen to play the game as I had never played it before. So why couldn't the GM be in the party. We tried following the rules as best as possible.

Our Characters
Deklan

A halfling rogue with a long bow (This was my character)

Dwarven Warrior (Devan)

I was unsure if Devan my other party member named his character, the second being a dwarf tank character with a big axe.

Elven priest (Xiang)

Xiang chose to be the healer of our party.

Game Play

It took at least two hours to figure out how to set our character's up. The guide book we were given gave us the right information, but didn't explain the stats properly. Later getting into the game we discovered that our stats were wrong. The scenario was to retrieve a stolen maiden's goods from a group of bandits... the first fight is a simple spider... after trading blows for a good 5 minutes, we discovered the right way to battle and our priest beat it to death.

The Verdict

The game is simple and very flexible but the rule book on it's own is very confusing. If the book had a simple template or list of events how the battling worked it would be easier. But overall good game.

@tukeycon Thanks for the review.

We have been making an effort to continue updating the rules to make them clearer, and less dependent on the d20 SRD. The current rules are compiled in the Microlite20 Rules Cyclopedia which is supported through Patreon: the rules are free to download though.

Another thing we are doing is creating stand alone micro setting bundled with rules to go along with them.

Is there anything particular that you ran into problems with, or specific that you would like to see made?

No problem, Other than that we had a lot of fun just attempting to create our characters but once we started we had a lot more fun. Thank you.

Maybe explain a little more about the combat system, like a template maybe of how a play should go about it. Like, what is bite or scratch. How should the player attack, do they roll a d8 and then roll again to determine what... Maybe dumbing down a few of the game mechanics, I am bad at reading the rules and understanding at the drop of a hat.
