Romanian history / Mircea the Shepherd / Episode 10

in #romania7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemians,

I present today Radu Paisie a leader of Wallachia (Romania).

.
Mircea the Shepherd (born? - dead September 25, 1559) was Prince Voievod of Wallachia three times:
January 1545 and on March 17th entered Bucharest - November 16, 1552;
May 1553 - February 28, 1554 and in March he left Bucharest;
January 1558-21 September 1559.

He was the fifth son of Radu the Great.
She was nicknamed "the Shepherd" because before she was on the throne she was trading sheep for Constantinople.
His baptismal name was Dumitru and was married to Chiajna, the daughter of Petru Rares.

The Ottoman Empire appointed him a lord in Wallachia in January 1545 instead of his stepbrother Radu Paisie and on March 17, 1545, he entered Bucharest to climb the throne.

Many boyars opposed his appointment, and two weeks after his appointment, Mircea Ciobanul killed most of the boyars and confiscated their possessions. Those who escaped alive have fled to Transylvania.

On 24 August 1546, the boyars who escaped with life have a first attempt to expel Mircea Ciobanul from the country's leadership. But the army of the Wallachian voivode came out victorious in the battle of Periş.

At the beginning of 1548, a new struggle took place between the two sides, at Miloste, where once again the prince of Wallachia emerged again victorious. Most of the wandering boyars were murdered by Mircea the Shepherd.

In 1551, the Habsburgs occupied Transylvania and wanted to bring to the head of Wallachia a ruler to be vassal.
They supported Radu Elijah to expel Mircea the Shepherd from the throne of the country.
The fear of betrayal made him kill all 47 boyars of his own.
Even so, Mircea the Shepherd is defeated by Radu Ilie, in Măneşti, a battle given in November 1552.

In the spring of 1553, Mircea the Shepherd recovers his throne, with the help of Alexandru Lăpuşneanu, the ruler of Moldavia. As the relations between the two collapsed shortly, the Moldavian voivode pushed Mircea the Shepherd away, placing Patrascu the Good at the head of the country.

The new ruler of Muntenia was to die in January of 1558, on the throne of the country coming back Mircea the Shepherd.
Most of the boyars in Wallachia left the state, but they received the promise from the ruler that if they return they will spare them.
Mircea the Shepherd did not keep his word, and every boyar returned to the country would be killed.

Mircea the Shepherd died on September 25, 1559, being buried in the church at Curtea Veche-Old Yard in Bucharest. His place on the throne was taken over by his son, Peter the Young, who at that time was only 13 years old.
