Steemit Mineral of the Day #2 - Native Copper Crystals & Chrysocolla from New Jersey!
The second in my series of rock and mineral specimens is a world-class Native Copper Crystals with Chrysocolla from the famous Chimney Rock Quarry in Boundbrook, Bridgewater Twp., New Jersey, USA, which measures approximately 9.5 cm x 3.6 cm!
This is a top notch Copper specimen from a quarry which is famous for Native Copper and Secondary Copper Minerals, and it is in a class of its own with its stunning crystallized Native Copper in a branching, aborescent formation, which is covered in areas by beautiful, eye-catching bright blue Chrysocolla. The Chrysocolla forms as an alteration product as groundwater came into contact with the Copper. Chimney Rock Quarry is one of the only NJ localities that has ever produced Native Copper, and it is by far the most prolific and well known NJ Copper mineral locality. Like many other New Jersey quarries and mines, Chimney Rock is a Trap Rock quarry where stone is quarried for commercial sale and usage, so Zeolite Minerals are also found within the Basalt deposits that other NJ quarries like Prospect Park in Haledon and Upper & Lower New Street in Paterson are famous for.
