Khan "Space Shanty" (1972)

in #rock6 years ago (edited)

This album will delight the fans of the so-called Canterbury scene, since its members are Steve Hillage on guitar and vocals, Dave Stewart on keyboards, and Nick Greenwood on bass and vocals, with Eric Peachey in charge of the drums. The disc was released in London 1972 by the Deram seal and was produced by Neil Slaven; his songs are the following:

  1. Space Shanty (Inc. The Cobalt Sequence And March Of The Sine Squadrons)
  2. Stranded (Inc. Effervescent Psycho Novelty No. 5)
  3. Mixed Up Man Of The Mountains
  4. Driving To Amsterdam
  5. Stargazers
  6. Hollow Stone (Inc. Escape Of The Space Pilots)

Members:
Steve Hillage – guitars, vocals
Nick Greenwood – bass guitar, vocals
Eric Peachey – drums
Dave Stewart – organ, piano, celeste, marimbas

They excel above all three songs, which are true gems of the Canterbury scene, such as Space Shanty (sound collage and continuous changes of rhythm)

Stranded (beautiful poetry and lyricism) and Driving to Amsterdam (jazz dessert very typical of the genre). The three following songs continue to have a very good level, especially due to the frenetic talent of Dave Stewart - who joined the group ten days before the recording of the album, which implies even more merit.

In this way, Khan joined the long list of dark bands of the Canterbury Scene (like Uriel or Egg), which did not follow a continuity in time, but which gave us real musical gems ...

Highly recommended

Paul
