Can rock and heavy metal survive? Spotify says no

in #rock6 years ago

You just have to take a look at the list of most listened to songs in Spain Spotify to observe that, despite the popularity of the genre at festivals and concerts, very few people listen to Heavy Metal and Rock.

While Download Festival brings together 40,000 people per day, the Resurrection Fest does the same with 27,000, Rock Fest Barcelona has an average of 22,000 attendees per day, the Legends of Rock is filled with 12,000 or 13,000 people per day and the big concerts as Iron Maiden, Metallica or Aerosmith sell tens of thousands of tickets in a matter of hours and days, the numbers are not reflected in the same way in the digital consumption habits of music in the platform most used today.

A look at Spotify leads us to a string of names that triumph in the world of Latin pop, reggaeton and national pop. Judas Priest's new theme, "Lightning Strikes", made available to fans on Spotify last 5 January accumulates just 514,000 total reproductions. A classic like "Breaking the Law", which has been on the platform for several years since Judas Priest always had his catalog available on Spotify, reaching 46,421,000 views. Hits like "You've Got Another Thing Coming" or "Painkiller" reach 21,000,000 and 23,000,000 views respectively, much less than songs from other genres.

This can happen because the audience that listens to rock is a consumer of physical product and continues to view digitally with suspicion.

It has been a late addition to the digital era, to the point where many of the great artists such as Pink Floyd, AC / DC, Metallica or more recently Def Leppard have endured several years to allow their songs to be included on platforms like Spotify.

If not, the figures that can be observed in Spotify are indicative of where we are going.

I think it is such a pity that good music is receiving less and less attention, while those things that I still resist to call music, like reggaeton and that new trend (or not so new, idk) called "trap"are becoming more relevant and widespread everyday. And when I say pity, I mean a total horror.

I'm happy to find someone like you here. Following in 3,2,1...
