The ruins of Babylon, ancient capital of Babylonian Empire, are some 50 miles (80km) south of modern Baghdad. The city is reputedly the site of the tower of Babel, the ruins of which are claimed to be those of a ziggurat (stepped tower) within the city walls. Babylon also contained fine temples and palaces, including the great palace of Nebuchadnezzar II, and the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Ishtar Gate is the only structure that has survived intact to the present day

The remains of a mysterious early civilisation were discovered at this site, 450 mile (725km) north-east of Bangkok. Bronze items, including weapons and jewellery, that were unearthed gave rise to the theory that bronze making originated here as early as 3600 BC. It was previously thought that bronze making was first developed in the Middle East around 3000 BC

Bhubaneshwar – India

On the swampy coasts of Orissa, about 12 miles (20km) south of the Mahanadi river, stands one of the wonders of India known as the “City of Temples”. It is said that several thousand temples were built in the area, although only 30 now remain, together with some 500 tombs. The temples were constructed between 7th and 15th centuries, the most famous, Lingaraja, being build AD 1000. Although it is stark inside, he exterior features highly decorative sculptures, created by an unknown hand in homage to an unknown god or goddess, perhaps Shiva.
