The last white rhino
Sadly today we mourn the loss of the last male northern white rhino. Sudan was 45 years old and was living in Kenya at a wildlife conservancy called Ol Pejeta.
However some good news in that scientists have been able to take enough dna to have a chance in the future or having the science to continue the species even without a living male.
Elodie Sampere is a manager at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and she is hopeful there is still a chance of reviving the species.
“The death of Sudan does not mean the death of the species. We still have two females that are there,” she said.
However, both Najin and Fatu the two remaining female white rhinos are unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. So, scientists hope to use a technique called in-vitro Fertilisation which combines the genetic material of a male and female white rhino which they can then implant into the uterus of a female southern white rhino.
Rhino IVF is a radically new procedure and could cost over £7 million but it gives conservationists hope that Najin and Fatu will be able to have their own calves one day.
It’s not just the northern white rhino that’s in danger though many species and sub species of rhino are now critically endangered.
Only 2 left of the entire species. It's gonna take a lot of science and a lot of luck to pull it off.
although scientists have a future plan to preserve white rhinoceros, but I am very sad about this incident, only one more male white rhinoceros in the world and died. hopefully, the future of white rhinoceros can be preserved with the advance of science. oh yeah, i'm from indonesia, and live in aceh, that is on north sumatra island. I have never seen the Sumatran rhinos directly, even the people in my neighborhood also do not see the Sumatran rhinoceros. this is because the number of population decreased dramatically. hopefully rhino sumatra not fared just like white rhinoceros
This is really really sad news. :(
It's very sad and heart breaking for me to see anyone dying let alone animals, I love animals. Anyways I hope that the scientists could succeed in making more of them without the males of the species.
