I hadn't read @dragosroua's explanation....I did find a good one on @themarkymark's page and that's how I calculate mine.

A witness is a person administrating a server which produces blocks for the Steem blockchain (somehow equivalent with a miner in Bitcoin). Without witnesses there is no blockchain, no posts, no nothing.
