The Darkest Minds Review

In 2018, a disease spread across the world, decimating the youth under the age of 18. That's the stupidest part of the movie, since that number is probably based on laws rather than the fact that humans aren't actually fully adults until around the age of 25. Otherwise, it's a really good movie.

This film takes a look at the dark nature of adults and how susceptible we are to fear, causing us to turn against our kids and treat them as animals, or worse. But it also explores the resilience of children, their hopefulness and their ability to survive serious hardships. The children who aren't dead become gifted with one of 5 psychic skills: super-smart (Claircognizance?), telekinetic, electrokinesis, telepathy and mind control, and pyrokinesis (firemakers). Unfortunately for them, the last two categories are killed on detection, and the rest are sent to concentration camps, where their lives are miserable and they are used for slave labor. In addition, if you escape (that's a big if, because they don't hesitate to shoot escaping kids), they'll send "tracers" - bounty hunters - after you. And then there's the Children's League - but the jury's still out as to which side they're on.

The story revolves around a black girl named Ruby Daly who, as a child, wipes her parents' memories and is taken by the military to a camp. She is aided by the Children's League and then gets help from other kids. Things get better but, of course, they also get worse. I won't spoil it for you. It's worth watching for the vast majority of people.

For those who become fans, except to see at least 2 more films, if not 5 more, because there are already 6 stories in the series. Oh, don't worry that the cast is full of relatively unknown performers - they deliver a great show!
