#review - Inhumans

in #review7 years ago (edited)

Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Ant Man... The list of characters that has gotten a movie adaptation is ever growing. Netflix jumped on board with creating tv-shows for DareDevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Defenders, The Punisher (YESSS!!!). Other studios also created shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D , Legion etc.

Next in line to be added to the list will be .....

Inwhat? Most people will probably never have heard of Inhumans before.
This show actually made it's debut in IMAX theaters early September by airing the first 2 episodes. That certainly raises my expectations of this show.

I try to minimize the amount of spoilers in this review

The show starts with that familiar 'Marvelesque' music and a beautiful shot of the moon and the earth in space followed with some really beautiful scenes on a small island called Oahu, Hawaii. And with beautiful shots I mean .. sharp, slow motion shots with mud spatters and rain etc. You can really see that his was shot for Imax. It would be great if the show will keep it up!

We're being introduced to the Inhumans in the form of Tritan who quickly drops the words Terrigen and a city called Attilan. People without previous knowledge still has no clue about anything that is happening. After the scene we're instantly taken to Attilan where we'll see Medusa and Black Bolt in bed, only covered by Medusa's hair. This scene is only needed to make the viewer aware that they're king and queen. We'll see a zoom-out of the city that actually looks pretty low-budget CGI. This will not really change much, sadly.

The story (possible, minimal spoiler)

The story revolves around the Royal Family of The Inhumans. We're presented with a military coup by Maximus, the brother of Black Bolt who is the King of The Inhumans. Not everybody that is exposed to the Terrigen mist (you will see it, but it will not be explained) will get powers. The people who don't get powers are forced to work in the mines and are treated as low-life citizens. Maximus has no powers and fights to gain equal rights for everybody and to return to earth. The Royal Family gets scattered during the coup and end up on different places on Hawaii. They'll have to find each other to fight back.

You get very little information about everything to work with while the events are unfolding in the first 2 episodes. You'll see all sorts of characters popping up while you have no clue who they are and what they do. With some, you'll figure out pretty quickly who they are and what they are, but with some you'll keep wondering what their connection with The Royal Family is.

The problem also starts with the very justifiable reason of Maximus to start a coup and seize control. There is no information of the history of Attilan making it harder for you to root for the so called good-guys. They do talk about the past sometimes, but it won't shed any more light on the events.

The Cast

The cast is quite diverse. They have some really good actors, and some really bad actors. Luckily, most of the time the good actors will overshadow the bad ones.

The main story revolves around The Royal Family. The King, Black Bolt, is played by Anson Mount. He also played Cullen Bohannon on Hell on Wheels. He's a great actor and really performs here. His brother, Maximus, is played by Iwan Rheon. You'll probably know him as Ramsay Bolton from Game of Thrones and Simon Bellamy from Misfits. Iwan is a very great actor and really carries the story with his scenes. The Queen of Attilan, Medusa, is played by Serinda Swan. While here acting is not bad, her CGI hair is. We'll see Gorgor, played by Eme Ikwuakor, who is the cousin of Black Bolt and the leader of Attilan's army. Crystal is Medusa's sister and played by Isabelle Cornish. The last of the Royal Family is Karnak, also a cousin of Black Bolt, played by Ken Leung.

Let's not forget Lockjaw!!

Verdict

I'll give this show a try with a few more episodes. I enjoyed the acting of Iwan Rheon and there were some funny and nice scenes in the show, but it'll have to step up the game to keep my attention. I'm glad that I didn't have the time to watch this in IMAX since I don't feel it was worth the money.
