Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson - Book Review

in #review6 years ago

Here we go again, we return to the Malazan Book of Fallen world and the third novel in the series, Memories of Ice. I must admit that unlike the previous time when I read all this, now I am more and more impressed by the world and events in it. There are so may things that I notice now.

In the third novel of this series we return to the continent where everything started in the first part of the series. Likewise, the characters who stayed there also come back. Each of them carries with it a great burden of history, and great expectations have been put before them. Although, now, the entire army is in a different situation because it is expelled from the Empire and acts for itself. Or at least it looks that way. Here the writer brings incredible pacts, between the enemies that had previously been fighting for decades against each other, and now adds a new dimension to the situation. And all this for the purpose of fighting the enemy that has been ruling by the so-called tyranny, and occupies new territories for his empire at a rapid pace.

Memories of Ice brings us a lot of things. First of all, I would say, the most important step for me is the quality of writing. It is more and more easier for writer to tell the events, as well as better descriptions of battles. You can see that step up in writing wright there in Prologue. Practically every segment, from dialogue to description of internal monologues of characters, has all been improved and now looks even more grandly literary work than before.

The complex world itself and the characters in it have not fallen in this novel, even more, it seems that the quality of the writing that is promoted gives added freedom to the same if the advancement of the world in which everything is happening. In this part, many characters are gaining in importance, and many of the gods come among the mortals. Somewhere in all the games and intrigues that the mortals play, or the Gods plan, lies a profound and comprehensive threat. The threat is so great that it can rob both friends and enemies. An ancient opponent, one that should be destroyed long ago.

Another thing I have noticed before, because the writer simultaneously speaking and describing events that are happening, also with light and small moves, sets a new pawn on the board of this world that will have some future roles and belong to a major story.

What you will not lack is new characters. New races. Ericson never stops adding them in the story. You will be amazed by the diversity that all of them possess and that makes them unique. What is perhaps the most characteristic of his character displays is that he has a distinct inner voice and personality, each of them who play a role in the development of the event.

In the middle of the book, you will see incredible scenes. The army of mercenaries, who swear to the God who dies, will defend the city to the last man in a siege. Thousands will die, and all who survive will be heroes. This may not be the greatest battle or the best written by the military doctrine, but on the side of human suffering, fighting and horror, this is a worldwide work.

What determines whether this series favors to you, and whether you will continue reading is definitely the last two chapters in the book. You will see the sufferings, because of the small mistakes in the past. You will see and feel the pain of loss as if it were your own. You will see the honor of a soldier, who has little to do with reason. And you will see future plans as they evolve, right after the horrible events.

This is truly an Epic Fairy, and you will enjoy in every word written. I'll see you soon.
