Demon Cycle Series by Peter V. Brett

in #review6 years ago (edited)

Today I continue reviews of Epic fantasy books and writers ( their styles, ideas..). I'm going to talk about Peter V. Brett and his work, Demon Cycle. It contains five books, and the last book from the series was translated in my country so everything is here for us to read.

Back in the days, when I started reading Peter's writing there was only 1st book published so from that moment it was a long way to this point. Gaps between each book gave me time to think of many ideas.. What's going to happen next? Is he seriously considering to do that or no after all?

Let's start from beginning. As many novels you have to have protagonist, so story started pretty typical. In some far distant village, little boy, on the first moment very ordinary boy, had some bad thing happening in his life. Tragedy that moved him in his life path. Difference here is that that boy through books grows in a dangerous man. In the meantime he will gain a lot of personal power and vow to use this power and knowledge to exterminate the demons. By the way, he gets many friends, sworn enemies and dead enemies.

What makes this series unique is enemy and system of magic that is used to kill these enemies. You see, they are demons, but they only emerge in night and only way to fight them is by drawing symbols. Symbols that can contain magic only to protect or kill them. This system which writers has implemented is very interesting because this option to draw symbols gives everyone of them a chance to fight or to save lives of those who they love.

Peter V. Brett gave a little time for inventing new cultures, so you will see many similarities with Arabic one and so on, but that is not the problem. Because it all fits perfectly in the story. Aspect of the series about which the writer has much thought about the hierarchy. Every nation has many instances of power and power, as well as knowledge. And every such form of functioning is top-notch, you can not find it in any moment. Also, the system of honor, and the weight of the words play a big role.

The writing style itself does not represent anything spectacular at least in relation to the price setting itself and the world in which it is happening. It is obvious that the writer plays on the card that the intensity and interest of the action itself is sufficient to overcome some minor drawbacks in the literary work itself. Although this may sound too rough, my opinion is so even though I have met many people whose opinions are contrary to the opposite.

What has left me as a final impression after reading books is the diversity of characters. They are authentic and different as they can be. Although many of them associate the same or similar goal, each one has a history and personal tragedy that burdens them and gives them many new dimensions. Each one of them found a way to put his scars in the past in the service of his struggle for the future.

Maybe not one of the best series on the market but one worth reading for sure.

I've read the books in this cycle, all except the last one that didn't come out yet. I love the story and the characters but I feel the author went a little bit awry with the story line in the last book the Core. That's just my opinion, let me know what do you think.

I agree about story. To me also it's a little too stretched, but it's still a great work.
