Review Album of The Day: Selena Gomez & The Scene “A Year Without Rain”

in #review6 years ago (edited)

Disney Princess comes from Hilary Duff to Miley Cyrus. Selena Gomez is one in between. The sweet and adorable star of the Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place" production at the age of 18 re-released her second album "A Year Without Rain" with her backing band The Scene. Formula used is still a safe formula a la Disney Channel Artists: the music must match the pop music trend that existed in the last six months. If Miley Cyrus has become the successor of Britney Spears, Demi Lavato is a girl version of John Mayer with singer-songwriter image, then in this album Gomez is positioned as Katy Perry (who also wrote again on this album) or Ke $ ha younger version, pious, and virginal, with similar electro-pop music.

My criticism on this album, Gomez should have included more hard rock elements in his songs, even though the direction of his music shifted to dance pop. The music on this album despite the easy listening sounds for the music fans a la Britney Spears, Ke $ ha, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, was already too generic. It has been done a thousand times before. Especially the content of the lyrics that are too market and do not offer anything new. In general, this album contains dance-pop and slow ballads. Nothing new. The songs are still bubble gum, incomparable vocal arrangements, dance floor friendly, catchy and light melodies, plus hooks that are easy to remember.

However, when compared to other Disney Princess like Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, and Emily Osment, Gomez's voice is still better, especially in reaching low to high tones smoothly. Thank God his voice on this album is free auto tune effect, unlike the album Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Ke $ sha.

And, in a way, there was a musical development after his debut album, "Kiss and Tell", whether the fans would agree with a change from the band's pop music type on the first album to the dance and synth-pop on this album. There are three songs I recommend from this album: 'A Year Without Rain', 'Rock God', and 'Round and Round'.

Here is a quick review of the three songs.

A Year Without Rain

Dance song is really good, ala dance tracks of the 90s. What a fun song to listen to. A perfect summer track. Gomez imagines about a day without her beloved like a year without rain. Forget the lyrics, just enjoy the beats and melody

Rock God

Written and featured backing vocals from Katy Perry. An upbead song to dance to. Fill the lyrics about falling in love with a guy who is a rock star. Check it out!

Round and Round

The opening song of this album with a hard beat. So easy to dance to, where the singer is fighting against her feelings for a boy who she really can not trust.
