Beware Unsolicited Email Job Scams!

in #review5 years ago

I received the following unsolicited emails from "Khloe." Although the email addresses are different, they are both generic email services rather than a company specific service, which is questionable. Time for my sleuth hat! 🕵

As you can see, there are some similarities but there isn't a lot to work with here. Charter.net is owned by Spectrum, so that doesn't help. Mail.com is just another generic email service. I did reply to the 2nd email and asked for further information, including their website, but received nothing back.

IP Address Lookup & TraceRoute

I looked at the full emails, pulled these IP addresses, and looked them up on IPLocation.net and Ultratools.com's IP Lookup and Ultratools.com's IP TraceRoute. The similarity of the first 2 IPs is interesting. This may not mean much to you, but please note that both the first and last IPs show as having gone through Germany on the 5th hop of the TraceRoute. This may or may not be significant.

Really, though, there isn't much else to go on.

Email Addresses

The fact that both email addresses contain the apparent name "Khloe" suggests that the same person or group is involved.

Subject Lines

Both emails reference CareerBuilder. I searched for the apparent CB job number, but found nothing.

Email Similarities

If you look at the two emails, you'll notice that there is a great deal of similarity in the layout and information, with the salaries being quite similar, and rather low for management.

Admittedly, some companies are stingy or small, and pay a low salary for a shipping manager, but such positions typically command a high rate of over $50,000/year. According to ww1.salary.com: "The base salary for Shipping Operations Manager ranges from $67,382 to $90,533 with the average base salary of $76,244." Glassdoor states: "The national average salary for a Shipping Manager is $52,304 in United States." For a QA Manager, Salary.com says: "The base salary for Quality Control Manager ranges from $91,060 to $121,932 with the average base salary of $104,967," and Glassdoor reports: "The national average salary for a Quality Control Manager is $75,971 in United States."

Also, the fact that both emails were unsolicited is a sign of fraud.

Signatures

Signatures presenting a job will typically have the person's name, job title, department, company name, address, phone number and logo. Most of that is missing from these two emails.

I'll be passing this along to the FBI to investigate.
