As I was searching for fake jobs posted by AOJ on CareerBuilder, I came across this one. Right off the bat, it looked suspicious because package handling from home is one of the oldest scams out there, so I put on my sleuth hat! 🕵

Since the job posting is liable to be removed because I've flagged it, here it is.

I'm going to walk you through the steps I've taken to check out this employer.

Phone Number

First of all, the 646 area code is in New York, while the business is located in California. This COULD be a mobile phone, so I used the free Phone Validator service to check. It's a VoIP number located in New York, but this is not positive proof of fraudulent activity because the person could work remotely for the company. I tried to call and while it didn't ring, I was eventually asked to state my name by a program, and then it rang and was eventually picked up by voicemail. Unfortunately, I couldn't understand the recording other than "Hi, you have reached...company...tone," as the recording was poor quality.

Contact Name

I was unable to locate a Julia Spice in NY with or without that number.

Salary

$25.00 - $31.00/Hour is an awful lot of money just to handle packages. Then again, perhaps they want to make sure anyone doing the job isn't going to feel tempted to steal by offering such a lucrative salary.

Errors

There are grammatical errors in the job description. While I have seen legitimate JDs with far more errors, it is generally a sign of a scam.

In addition, the Job Requirements section lists almost no requirements and a lot of job responsibilities, some of which are redundant. This lack of organization and redundancy can be seen on legitimate JDs, too, but is usually associated with scams.

Website

There is no website for this company that I could locate - company websites with similar names were for fitness and other industries.

Checking Review Sites

I looked on Glassdoor, Indeed, TrustPilot, Consumer Affairs and the BBB, but none of them had any info about this company.

How can an industry leader have no Internet presence other than on CB?

General Lack of Information

Ultimately, there is very little information that can be used to find out about this company. This makes it highly likely that this is fraudulent.
