My Review of Bedazzled (2000)

[Spoiler Alert! You've Been Warned!!]

Bedazzled wasn't a bad movie, but I can't say it was a good one either. It was just okay.

The plot itself was a bit cliché. You know how the story will turn out ten minutes into the movie. I mean, what else can you expect to happen when a good but desperate man makes a deal with the devil, for his soul no less? You know the wishes she grants are going to be messed up one way or another and that the desperate wisher will realize his mistake at the end and try to get out of the deal.

What really keeps you going in this movie is anticipating Elliot's wishes and just how exactly the devil would botch them up. It was spectacularly humorous, as you'd expect when you see Brendan Fraser in the cast. His portrayal of Elliot was super, and combined with Elizabeth Hunley's portrayal of the devil, is what keeps the movie solid.

The character 'Elliot' was also great and very well written. You can see how he grows after each wish experience, can even relate with him underneath all the black humor. His apparent lack of confidence and social skills actually incites some sympathy.

In the end though, the movie is mainly a moral-teaching one, stopping just short of being Christian. In fact, after seeing it, I couldn't help but notice the similarities to David White's Me Again.

But that's a review for another day.
