Rome TV Series Review

This series started in 2005 and was a collaboration between HBO and the BBC, the series focuses on two legionary soldiers that become heavily involved in key events in history. It is set in the ending of the Roman republic through caesar's assassination and the birth of an empire under Octavian. They encounter war, political intrigue, assassinations, family tragedies and more.

The first thing that the series reminded me of is game of thrones, not so much the content but the structure, gore and sex scenes. This is not an historical documentary this is a drama set within a very interesting and important part of history. So if you are looking for complete historical accuracy this isn't one, although it does try to replicate the culture of the time. Also most of the main events and battles. But if you are interested in ancient history especially Romans this is great.

The series itself is made interesting not because of the plot but the way they depict characters and the relationships between them, because we sometimes forget that these people were real humans who had their human flaws when making decisions. There is lots of fighting between families, friends ect just like a classic drama.

The two legionary they follow are very interesting characters who both change drastically over the series because of tragicities and other events. They represent the normal people in rome who in this series are controlled by the noble families and are forced to choose allegiances and commit their lives to serving them. You also have the contrast in the two soldiers that add some comedy and irony to the series.

So please check this out, it's on netflix and don't be put of by the rubbish intro, the series itself is of a lot higher quality, if you are looking for a good drama this could be it.
