Black Mirror Top 5 Episodes - NO SPOILERS

in #review7 years ago (edited)

Black Mirror is a science fiction television series created by Charlie Brooker. The British TV series focuses on a small group of characters or one main protagonist. The episodes usually involve the characters struggling in a futuristic society with new modern technology that assist humans, but has profound negative impacts on humans and their relationships. Each episode is standalone, usually set in an alternative version of today or the not so distant future, they often vary drastically; some with a bleak and sometimes violent tones, whilst some are more experimental and lighter, such as Hang the DJ which narrowly missed my list.

I believe the best thing about Black mirror is the fact its realistic and you can see similarities and patterns that suggest our society could well turn out like some of those presented in the show. You also have the factor that the story's only last 40 - 80 minutes , this leaves a lot to the imagination which allows you to create endless story, and try to answer the many questions the story's leave you with.

The national Anthem - Episode 1 Series 1

This is a very strange episode to start with, and very different to my other four picks as this story is based in our society or one that has many similarities. Character wise it focuses on the prime minister of the UK. The prime minister is given an ultimatum to do a very disgusting act on live TV or the princess the kidnapper is holding dies. The video is also shared on the internet. This results in a desperate man trying to balance his own emotions, saving a girls life, and keeping himself in a good light in the eyes of the public. The struggle continues exploring how different events easily sway the public and how as a society we want to see people put in horrible situations for our own satisfaction. The acting in this is exceptional and it makes a crazy, unrealistic situation seem possible in modern day.

Crocodile - Series 4 Episode 3

Crocodile is essentially a story about a normal woman who is turned into something very dark and in the end unrecognizable from the woman she was at the start. The first stage in her change is an accident which leaves her and her partner with a very dark secret. The rest of the show follows her trying to protect that secret at all costs. Another theme of this episode is a new modern technology that is used by an insurance company which allows them to read peoples memory's. And when another accident occurred the woman was a witness, she then has to try hide her secrets from an insurance company. This escalates turning this once fairly innocent woman into a murderer trying to do anything to escape being found out. This episode is really great at showing the audience someones emotions and how technology will make escaping justice impossible.

Arkangel - Series 4 Episode 2

A new technology is used by a mother to monitor her young child after she goes briefly missing. The technology allows her to see what she sees what she hears and even censor her vision. The monitor works well until her mother feels she is old enough to stop using it at the request of her daughter. The story escalates when the girl becomes more rebellious as a teenager and her mother starts using it again. This leads to her blackmailing friends of her daughter and eventually causing her own daughter to turn against her. Its truly feasible for this to happen in the future with technology becoming more invasive and mothers more protective in what they perceive as a more dangerous society.

White bear - Series 2 Episode 2

White bear is purely a bundle of questions that as the episode progresses you are slowly made to believe they are being answered. Until a dramatic twist in the story completely flips everything you think and shows a sick society that trivializes, humiliate and entertain themselves with a human who is revealed to have a dark past, some of you readers may believe her horrific actions justifies her torture. It starts with a young female adult who wakes up confused with no memory and a pile of tablets at her feet. She is then attacked by strangers whilst the general public film and watch with their phones. A completely traumatized women is dragged along on an adventure that involves a reality where some people are hunted and the general public have become spectators. But eventually the dramatic twist occurs and the women is shamed. She is paraded through the streets until it becomes apparent that this isn't a one off, but a continuous loop. This episode is fantastic if you want twists and turns and it really questions what is right and wrong when it comes to punishment.

White Christmas - Series 2 Episode 4

This is probably my favorite episode if i was to rank them from 1-5. I believe it has the best story line because in theory it has three story's, one real, one fake, and neither. The story's are told by two men having a Christmas dinner in a snowy isolated outpost. The two main explain why they decided to go there and what story brought them there. Both tales have a dark ending, as deaths involved. One is a build up after a break down in a relationship and the father being blocked out by using modern technology, the other a man trying to make extra money by assisting young men when they are dating. However there is a huge twist at the end of the story explaining that both men were hiding something. I'm not going to go into more detail because I may ruin an incredible episode that has everything you can wish for in a dark drama.

Thanks for reading my review, this is my first so if there is mistakes then feel free to comment them (i wont be offended) and also your top 5, you might completely disagree with me.

Sort:

I've watched a few episodes and they've all been really good. Will have to watch more. I knew Charlie Brooker in the past for his Wipe series, he was very good at making fun of current news and TV programmes. Not many people can do that and make something as good as Black Mirror, he's multi talented.

i'll have to check that out, i haven't seen much of his other content

You should definitely check out Dead Set and A Touch of Cloth.

I'll have a look thanks, is it on Netflix?

Black Mirror is fantastic. Few episodes fell flat, most were far above avrage, both in story telling and execution. Some of my favorites: Fifteen Million Merits (s01e02), The Waldo Moment (s02e03), San Junipero (s03e04), Nosedive (s03e01), Hated in the Nation (s03e06).
I also enjoyed a recent article showing some ways in which Black Mirror predicted actual current tech.

Yeah but flat for blackmirror, if they were compared to most tv they would look good. I'll have to watch some of them because i haven't watched much of season three. I'll have to have a look at that article, i love all that stuff. Do you mid checking out my new review on star trek discovery if you're into that. https://steemit.com/review/@kph/star-trek-discovery-review-no-spoilers

I didn't like too much the Netflix series but i loved the first two season, in my opinion now is more "trandy" than before...

Hmm I can see what you're saying. The first two I think have arguably more drama and less focused on technology which the latter series' have more of

Exactly...I hope in the future they will be better! ;)

I'm sure they'll be some really good episodes still to come
