Oats Studios - Volume 1 - God: Serengeti | Thoughts

in #review7 years ago

To start for those who don't know Oats Studio is an independent studio that makes various shorts and uploads them to YouTube for everyone to watch. The studio was created by Neill Blomkamp who has directed films such as District 9 and Elysium, the idea for the studio is to create as many shorts as they can to see what works and what can be expanded on in the future.

The latest short is called God: Serengeti (

) which touches on the idea of God, played by Sharlto Copley, watching over a small biome he has created. However rather than being loving and kind God is portrayed as being obnoxious and relatively disinterested in the small world he has created as he mostly pays more attention to the book he is reading, it also mentions how he forgot to turn a drought off and gets his butler to give the humans some water.

I personally think this is a very interesting short as for something that last for just under four minutes it raises a lot of questions along with being very captivating. As this is the shortest upload so far there isn't a huge amount to talk about, however I really like the animations of the people and the plants growing around them, it almost reminds me of the Civilization game series when the people are cheering and celebrating.

The set is also done well as you have a fancy room that you would imagine to be part of a big estate with a large sort of drawing board in the centre which you could imagine God to do a wide variety of experiments on. I also like that fact that God and his butler can perfectly see all that is going on, on the drawing board and the humans on the board appear to have no knowledge of God being there, as if they just see a normal sky above and nothing more.

I always look forward to see what Oats will bring to the table next and I’m sure we won’t have to long to wait, remember to vote and comment as always I would love to hear your thoughts on this short.

Very interesting, I hadn't heard of this before, I love Blonkamp, and am glad to see him doing something like this :-)

What a brilliant film! I'd love to see this expanded upon, although maybe its charm is in the fact that it is so short.

Brilliant concept, I'm now a subscriber to this channel :-)

Thanks again for posting!
