The Triple A (An Average Amateur) Review: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege

in #review7 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone! Chrispy99 here and back with another game review. This time I will be going over Rainbow Six: Siege and its style of multiplayer matches and appeal. Remember, this is my personal review of the game based on my experiences and looking at the game from an average consumer perspective. I will not go over specs and nitpick the game. I want to focus on the main points that would affect a consumer’s decision on buying a game and give enough perspective and context as to why the game is appealing. With that said, here we go!

Rainbow Six: Siege is a competitive online multiplayer FPS where teams of 5 players work together to complete 1 of 3 (attack vs defend) objectives on various maps. 2 teams are pitted against each other in rotating objectives in short matches. Each team is given a set of different soldiers or operators that have a unique gadgets, abilities, and weapons. Each weapon and gadget is uniquely crafted for each operator and no two team members are allowed to use the same operator. The premise of the game is for each team to work together to complete objectives by utilizing communication and information gathering to craft a strategy for success. On paper, this concept is a great idea for a game but like many games that force cooperation between random people, there are issues. With its wide appeal and accessibility, there can be a range of personalities clashing on a single team ranging from serious and heightened competitive gamers to children who talk trash and troll other players. From my perspective, when games are designed under the premise of cooperation, it is assumed that the player will be playing with friends or people who are like minded as the player. While playing with friends is a true situation for a gamer, it is very rare for players to find other random players who are like minded and open to communicate properly within the game. Based on this concept alone, I would only recommend this game to people who will be playing with their friends. If you plan on playing this game in the hopes of solely becoming a pro gamer, more power to you and good luck to you.

Moving away from concepts, the gameplay itself is very fast paced. Although there are solo missions for the player to practice with different operators and situations, the bulk of the game is mainly around the online competitive multiplayer. All the matches are one life each round and plays like a military FPS. However, this game is very flexible in terms of time management. It is a definitely a game where more investment of time towards the game shows its rewards but also, the matches are short enough to have as a pick up and play feel. One set of matches can go very quickly and they can leave the game after and switch to another within I would say a 30 minute timeframe. But also during those matches, the tensions within the gameplay really give that feel of adrenaline making it feel like every decision and movement is important as the timer ticks down. The multiplayer is very in depth when it comes to concepts and competitive strategies. Sound profiling, surface densities, and map awareness are all smaller concepts focused around one major concept of the game: information gathering. The game heavily emphasizes a player’s ability to learn and adapt to different situations whether certain areas are blocked off or certain operator abilities are used. Players who are more involved with the game benefit over casual gamers but there are still plenty of opportunities for newcomers to get the upper hand or learn better strategies over their predecessors.

My personal experience with this game has really revolved around my friends and the investment we have put into this game. We all have bought season passes and played both on a casual level as well as a competitive level. The competitive camaraderie among my friends is amazing and the funny and amazing moments that happen we reminisce for months on end. We’ve put in hundreds of hours playing and I have used it as streaming content to record all the shenanigans we get ourselves into. We do complain about balancing issues from time to time as well as glitches with the game but with any game, there will always be tweaks and bugs. No single video game is perfect. This game honestly is a great multiplayer game if you are looking for a cooperative and competitive feel in short little timed matches rather than long drawn out rounds. We paid roughly $20 for the game as well as another $30 dollars for the season pass. Overall, for that price point, I would say the game is worth its value if you have friends who will consistently play with you.

TL;DR: Rainbow Six Siege is a great online multiplayer military FPS combining information gathering, teamwork, and strategy for a competitive play. However, like many cooperative intensive games, I would only recommend it to players if they have a core set of friends that plan on playing alongside with to get the maximum amount of value for this game.

This game is one of the best recent online FPS shooters. Apart from Overwatch pretty much the only one that got of the ground IMO.

Great post ! Would you mind if I included it in todays "best of gaming"?
