DIY phone holder for gaming

in #retrogaming9 years ago (edited)

I built a gaming emulator on a Raspberry Pi about a year ago, but without a GPU i was unable to enjoy much above PS1. I recently got a new phone (Moto G5 Plus) and got some emulators on it. I quickly found out trying to use on screen controls it was not very enjoyable for me. So i got my Logitech F710 gamepad, a USB OTG cable and built my phone holder out of kebab skewers and masking tape.

A much better experience now, I have been enjoying dreamcast and n64, as i was missing out on those with my raspi.

Hoping for PS2 emulation soon.

How did you get your controller to work on your phone?

For me it was simply plug and play with the Android OS, my device supports OTG (USB On the Go). A google search with your device name and OTG should tell you. You can buy USB OTG cables on Amazon or ebay if your device supports it. More info on the technology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go

The emulators needed to detect the gamepads, which is done in the application menus. Selecting them in the application menus and pressing keys to detect their presence on others. I use Tendo64, Reicast, and Matsu Player.

That's awesome you have your own on the go retro game system!
