Star Wars Galaxies is one of only two MMORPGs that I played significantly. The other being Dark Age of Camelot. I enjoyed them both a lot but there are a couple of things that keep me away from subscription based games like this. First, I might play several hours a week or not at all for a month or two. This isn't very economical when it comes to having to pay a subscription fee every month. Second, when these games close down the game is no longer playable in any meaningful way.

Star Wars Galaxies gave you what every Star Wars fan dreamed of. It was an RPG made up of multiple worlds. Even space combat was added. You could be a Jedi or bounty hunter or whatever your favorite type of character was. Sure, the game had its flaws but it was still pretty great. To be fair, I gave up on it quite a while before the servers shut down. The revamping of the game and rule changes in later expansions made it not very fun when you had limited time to play.

I see that there are a couple of emulation projects out there. Apparently you can run your own server now. I haven't delved into it too deeply to see how it all works but it sounds interesting. Has anybody tried Project SWG or SWGEmu?

Star Wars Galaxies was released in 2003 and the original minimum system requirements were:

CPU: Pentium III or Athlon equivalent
CPU SPEED: 933 MHz
RAM: 512 MB
OS: Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP (NT & 95 not supported)
VIDEO CARD: 32 MB 3D Video Card with Hardware Transform & Lighting (NVIDIA GeForce2+ / ATI Radeon 7200+)
TOTAL VIDEO RAM: 32 MB

I think I had an Athlong XP of some flavor or another by then and probably a GeForce4 TI 4200 (or perhaps even a 4600 but I can't remember).

Later expansions included:

Jump to Lightspeed (2004)(added space ships and ship to ship combat!)
Rage of the Wookiees (2005)
Trials of Obi-Wan (2005)

I suppose the graphics were pretty shabby by today's standards but they still look okay to me. My original copy is still sitting here on a shelf waiting for the servers to come back online...
