I don't think I ever tried Prize Fighter but the idea reminds me a bit of MicroLeague Wrestling (though that one was turn based).
Sonic CD didn't have THAT many levels did it? I thought it was something like 21 (7 levels x 3 zones or something like that). The original Super Mario Bros. had 8 worlds x 4 levels per world for 32 :). I'm sure the Sonic CD levels were larger though...
Sonic CD cheated somewhat. You had three versions of each level. Past, present and future. Each had various differences over the other two versions.
