Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)

One of the great things about the Game Boy Advance is that it is basically a portable Super Nintendo. Many games were released for that portable system that were almost exact replicas of their Super Nintendo counterparts. Donkey Kong Country was one of those.

Though released nearly a decade later, Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Advance was largely unchanged from the original. There were more mini games and some variation within the ones that were the same. There was also an additional, harder difficulty level added.

For those not familiar with Donkey Kong Country, it was really the height of 2D side-scrolling action adventure games on 16-bit systems, at least in terms of graphics and sound. Donkey Kong has apparently reformed his ways and is no longer kidnapping the girlfriends of others. In this game, he is the victim having had his banana stash stolen. With the help of the newly introduced Diddy Kong, you'll battle various enemies to recover your stash.

In addition to the Game Boy Advance version, there was also a version created for the Game Boy Color a few years earlier and also versions for the Wii and Wii U via Nintendo's Virtual Console later on. The Game Boy Color version is not going to be as good from a graphics and sound point of view but any of the others are a good choice. One other way to play this one is to pick up the SNES Mini/SNES Classic Edition though those seem to be absurdly expensive now.

Donkey Kong Country spawned two sequels on the Super Nintendo, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!. Years later the series finally made a comeback with Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii and its sequel Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on the Wii U.
