[Game Review] I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is a classic PC adventure game. It's a apocalyptic story where a super computer wiped the Humanity. and only 5 humans left.
First released in 1995 the game is based on a short story by Harlan Ellison, though he wrote the story in 1967 he played a big role in making this game. as he wrote most of the dialog and voiced AM (and his voice is very fitting for machine that enjoys the torture).
I haven't read that story to compare the game to it, so I'll talk about the game only.
Gameplay
This game plays just like the point & click adventure games of it's time. You choose an action and click where to apply it... At first I felt this game offers too limited options as each map contains about 3 interact-able at most.
But the characters interaction s with these objects makes the game more life-like.
The voices in this game are too good, very emotional. Unlike other games that try to limit the number of their words. The characters in these game repeat what they say with more emotion to add impacts to their words.
Story
America, Russia and China.. each made a supercomputer to start a war that humanity can't foresee... But the computers allied into one entity (called AM) and became conscious and since he hated the humanity he started a war to wipe it.
But since he is still a machine, he realized that without humans he'll have nothing to do, so he left 5 humans alive (4 men and a woman) made them immortal, and tutored them for his own enjoyment.
The game starts 109 years later where AM suggested a game for them to play.
Through the game, each one of them learns something or redeemed a mistake of the past.
I think therefore I AM.
Gorrister
After he "killed" his wife, He lived in regret. AM took his heart out and never let him have a moment of peace.
In his story he was sent into a blimp. Met with his wife's parents.... And he had to learn self-forgiveness.
Ellen
The only woman left in the world. She was a very successful electronic creature. But an incident in the past left her afraid of men and the color yellow. AM enjoys putting her in the yellow and see her hysteric.
In her story, she was sent to a pyramid made of electronics (everything is yellow). And is told there's a part of AM there she can use to shut him down forever. In the process, she had to learn facing her fears.
Ted
Once a successful man, Rich and handsome... But paranoid. unaltered by AM. he feels he's an outsider to the group but he is in love with Ellen... AM enjoys mocking these weak points.
In his story he finds an Ellen in her death bed. He decides to save her. And through his Struggle he mets an Evil sorceress, an angel and the devil.
Benny
This is my favorite story, Benny was a commander in an army. He was a merciless man. AM changed his looks and morphed him into a monkey-like creature, and even removed his vocal-cords so he can't speak anymore.
In his story he was sent into a primitive tribe place. This merciless man who only cares about himself goes on a quest to find food, but learns compassion instead.
Nimdok
Nimdok was one of the doctors doing a merciless experiments. AM told him that they are exactly alike. His memory is failing so he doesn't remember a lot about his dark past.
In his story he was sent to his past and told to find the lost tribe, he met with people he imprisoned and killed. and he had to learn redeeming himself.
AM (Aggressive Menace)
Is the Allied Mastercomputer mentioned above, He is way too strong and by the time the games starts he compeletly owns the planet earth. But there are things even AM doesn't know.... there are beings even AM isn't aware they exist. and they want revenge on him. The game the AM is playing is equally risky for him as it's risky for the humans he plays with.
"No Mouth"
I don't know if there's a good ending in the game, but all the endings I have reached are bad (more like a "Game Over"). But I think it's normal for a story like this to have this type of ending.... it's depressing, but interesting at the same time... it leaves you a lot to think about.
This Part Below isn't a spoiler but it may change how you play the game
The words "I have no mouth and I must Scream" became clear by the ending I have reached... But I think this saying also describes AM: it's the most powerful thing on earth... he can change the appearance of things.. he can make people immortal.. BUT he's not omniscient... he doesn't have the ability to learn and expand (he can learn but only in the field he's programmed in: WAR)... And most of all... He can't move!! The only reason he left those people alive is to play with them and have something to do. AM really is a sad machine trapped in its own self.

although this game is a bit dark, has a good gameplay, I have not played but my nephew if, at any time I encourage you to play it, greetings has my vote.
This game IS dark and very depressing. The story is pretty grim, as well. I have a copy somewhere in my collection, but I have only watched youtube videos about the game.
Check out another book called "Colossus: The Forbin Project" and "Fall of Colossus" if you are interested in sci-fi and malicious AI.

The book was an amazing experience i found, it's pretty much the ultimate story of futilism that no matter what you do it's always going to end up one way.
