I finally got around to acquiring a 5.25" disk drive and extracting the contents a while back.

I'm surprised something like this still exists. I suppose there is a niche market for this. Was it USB?

No, this was a regular internal 5.25" disk drive that connects to the floppy drive connector on motherboards. I bought it on eBay but I don't remember if it was used or new old stock. These connectors could still be found on motherboards until relatively recently. For instance, some AM3+ (Athlon FX era) motherboards still had them. And Windows 10 and 11 still support floppy drives as well.
