I think in their day, they were supposed to be pretty good. My neighbor in college was working on his masters in computer science and he had one. His master's thesis was a program that scanned zip codes for the USPS, the old one was big and bulky and wouldn't recognize differences in handwriting. He did it on a Commodore 64 so they must be ok...he wound up going to work for EDS for a gazillion dollars!
