Retro Gaming Top 5 - Part 23 - 5 Reasons Retro Gaming is Better.

After a week of playing the new Middle Earth Shadow of War, I went back to playing some old SNES titles and realised that retro gaming is just as good, if not better than playing new titles. So, I put together 5 reasons why retro gaming is better than you think.

5 – Enter a world of Fantasy;-
While modern games try to be a realistic as possible with increased computing power comes better graphic capability, they tend to concentrate more on placing realistic characters and environments in the game, where as retro games are a lot more imaginative with levels using floating platforms, crazy creatures and making the games very colourful. Basically, you can let your imagination run wild, which is what gaming is all about.

4 – Plug and Play;-
While modern games are awesome in their own right, the problem being now is you have to wait for the game to download and install, and with numerous patches and updates, you have to wait for them too. Classic gaming was as simple as putting your new game in the console and away you go. That's it. Nice and simple design, that is unless you go back further when games came on cassette, then you had to wait on average 45 minutes before you could play. Thank you for the Cartridge.

3 - You Cheated;-
For the more mature gamers amongst us (like myself) will have noticed that modern games have done away with cheat codes entirely, being replaced with downloadable content. You may remember the classic cheat code of.. up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B, Select, this cheat code worked on a variety of Konami games to give you extra lives, enable 2 player or some other unique ability which made the gaming that much more enjoyable.

2 - Just Play it;-
Ever started to play a new game with the hopes of awesomeness straight from the start, only to be greeted by a long and very boring tutorial because the amount of button combinations that will make your head spin? You are not alone. When you think about it, when you have 4 arrow keys, 2 control buttons and a pause and select button, you never needed a tutorial, you plugged your game in, picked up the pad and got straight into the action.

1 – No Drama;-
Online gaming, as great as it can be at times, can also be filled of drama, kids and even full grown adults crying like babies because you killed them 10 times in a row, usually followed up by a handful of swearing and death threats. Multiplayer for retro gamers was inviting your friends over to play Nintendo with some drinks, snacks and a good time, with zero bull shit from someone you don't know.

I will agree with anyone that gaming today is very good, with visually spectacular graphics and story lines that are very gripping. But the essence of what made gaming great I think has been lost, replaced by spoiled kids that cry if I get a head shot on them in GTAV more than 5 times in a row.
