ESTELLE DRY-MULLER ARTIST·FRIDAY, 9 MARCH 2018
Estelle Dry-Muller is a qualified Fine Artist living and working in the Gauteng area. In 2015 she graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts and had been creating a diverse body of work, which mostly focused on sculpture and installation. In 2017 she switched her focus back to drawing, wanting to explore line and ink drawings. Drawing inspiration from comic books and illustration, something she has been an avid collector of, led her to create a new body of work with science fiction and fantasy themes.

My thoughts: Written by Artkapture
I remember as a very little girl, from about the age of 3, my dad would take me and my two brothers with him every Saturday morning to the local book swap shop. He was an avid reader and still is. My folks always encouraged us to read, but I was also lucky that they understood that books weren't just novels or in my case at that age fairy tales. Books were about wonderful imagination and this could be expanded on in books by viewing wonderful illustrations and even in comics. There wasn't a huge selection of comics at the swap shop, mostly Superman, Archie and my favourites, Asterix and Obelix. So Saturday mornings I would go and choose my comics for the week. Loving the graphic quality of the drawings and the expressive gestures.
So my initial love for art came from book illustrations and comic books.
Then came Star Trek and the Star Wars movies (the originals), to complete my love of fantasy, sci-fi and comics.
So when I see works that combine all these nostalgic memories, I'm taken back to Saturday mornings in a musty swap shop and reading comics with a torch late at night under the covers.
Art has changed, comics have changed, sci-fi and fantasy have changed, but then so have I, but the love for these things remain though.
Estelle uses simple techniques with fine liner, keeping the graphic quality of black and white. Gigantic plants adorn the background or create intricate patterns. Space ships are replaced by vintage cars. It's all these elements that take us back to comics and sci-fi of days gone by. Love her work.

Thank you so much @kathleenscarboro I'm having such fun posting South Africa's talent and it keeps me on my toes looking for new talent.
I read science fiction as a child also and remember reading "A Wrinkle in Time" with my parents who enjoyed it too.
