For a touch of China, head to any number of restaurants in Little Bourke St, Melbourne. You'll find everything from fine dining to takeaway and it's all amazing.

For the best pizza in Melbourne, go to Plus39 (www.plus39.com.au). André has done an amazing job here. We discovered this place the night we left for China for 3 months and couldn't wait to get back. Bookings are recommended.

A little further up the hill from Plus39 is a tiny street; Hardware Lane has a great srlection of restaurants. A cheeky local's tip — take your time looking at the menu and just move from one restaurant to another looking for the best deal. You will be offered free wine or dessert to lure you in. There's no scamming going on here, it's just how they compete with each other. Don't be afraid to ask for a better deal.

For a slice of Italy and Melbournian heritage, stroll up Lygon Street in Carlton. This is a cultural hub and home to some of the best pasta in Melbourne.

For Indian that will amaze you, go to Aangan in West Footscray (www.aangan.com.au). My wife and moved house just to be closer to Aangan.

For Greek you can't go past Kentro in Oakleigh (www.kentrocafe.com.au), or any of the other restaurants in the Eaton Mall area.
