Sunday rest day, or day 1 of the week??

I am confused!
Born in Sweden, but living in USA, I still haven't gotten used to the US calender.
In Europe, the week, day 1, starts with Monday, and ends with Sunday.
In US, it starts with Sunday, day 1.

However, as US is more religious than Europe, or at least northern Europe, how come its so ingrained here that Day 1, is sunday, but that is the day US use for church going and rest, while, in the bible, it should be Day 7?

Thoughts?
