That's pretty much exactly what happened in the 1500 years leading up to the Protestant Reformation. The Roman Church achieved exactly your scenario. Total control of much of western civilization and heaped up deviations from Biblical truth.

Then somebody invented the printing press and people actually started reading the Bible and said, "Hey, wait a minute..."

A lot of people died trying to correct things over the next 500 years.
It's not over yet...

        There is also a verse in John about God sending a comforter which Muslims say refers to Muhammad. Christians say they are misinterpreting that verse, as Jews say Christians misinterpret the verse you posted.

        The larger problems, like that Jesus was not of the lineage of David, remain. You've not actually rebutted them. Then there's stuff like this.
