Eternity GoalssteemCreated with Sketch.

Eternity is a long time. Sounds obvious, right? So when faithful servants of God imagine themselves living in a happy afterlife, a place among the angels, a post-Judgement-era utopian paradise, or whatever final destination an individual looks forward to, what does eternity really mean?

Let me ask another question, to put the first in perspective.

                                                            What next?

Suppose we follow the traditional Christian view of it, and everyone is enjoying complete happiness without end. Are these good people more or less sitting around collecting dust with a smile? Here you have a myriad of individual personalities, with different lessons, likes, dislikes, strengths, and quirks. One might be lazy. One might be ambitious, or restless. One may be somewhere in between, and decide to look further after a few billion years of singing and blissful contemplation. Another might reinvent the earplug if the guy singing next to him doesn't figure out how to carry a tune in a bucket.

God is an eternal being, but you hardly expect Him to sit around twiddling thumbs. God is an artist. A creator, one who envisions the next step and beyond, a builder who always has a project happening. According to the common interpretation of scripture, when existence was created God only rested for a day after working for six. This is not a being who would have us sitting around like neutered house cats for the next eighty eons!

So what next? Perhaps a game of planet-pool? I'd like to try black hole golf, myself. Gravity makes it easier, but astronomical distance and invisibility of the hole make things interesting. Sooner or later, diversions and holy-but-arbitrary pleasure will demand a change of pace. Anyone doubting that has much to learn about human nature, and if you're clever, you'll find an example within what Christians call the Old Testament. (hint: what happens when you feed tribes the same thing every day?)

Much like the example set by our Father in Heaven, I can promise you I'm going somewhere with this line of thought. I'm just hoping you'll beat me to it, though that won't stop me from following up with it in another article.

Fascinating, I was just thinking of this today

I wonder if the concept of eternity is the same all around.

Challenge accepted! black hole golf it is! eternity for the winner ;)

Eternity does sound a bit daunting , I guess one of the most important parts is how you get to spend your time in eternity, if you have led a good or bad life... resulting in a good or bad eternity.

The concept of forever is something no human truly grasp. I love this article because it test the boundaries of our imagination. Forever is truly a long time. We can't stay cooped up inside forever. If there is one thing that stays the same, it is change. Change is always happening, we just need to learn to adapt to it.

Eternity is honestly a terrifying concept. There's only so much in the universe.

Eternity sounds like its going to take forever...
Great perspective because much like the way I always imagined "heaven" to be prior to the knowledge and studies I have done over the past few years, would we really sing and dance before God for the rest of eternity? I never could picture how what would play out, and of course, I knew I could never know all because after all, I'm not a god, but I knew I'd always be in for a surprise. ;) Although I do, LOVE singing!! (Just by myself, lol).
Nice OT reference too, by the way!

Exactly! There's so much to it that we can't begin to guess, but I think the current view of it is ironically very limited, even limiting God in some ways, or at least ignoring His ways while simultaneously playing the cop-out card of clueless wonderment.

Humans personify the unknown (God) to make it more relatable...although we all will be so far off it will probably make us be every emotion at once!

Forever and ever... That's a long, long time...
