Kalimatush-shahadah (testimony of faith)
1. A credal formula of islam
The kalismatush-shahadah(testimony of faith) is a credal formula for identifying the key Islamic beliefs. The recitation of this formula with personal conviction is the qualification for entry into Islam, its also recited in the daily prayers and on so many other occasion.
in its basic form, the Kalimatush-shahadah states
اشهد ان لا اله الا الله وان محمد رسول اله
Ash-hadu alla ilaha illa lah; WA ash-had Anna Muhammad - AR rasululah
(I testify that there's no god but God ;and I also testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God).
This statement looks simple, but it's full of meaning, let's examine its two part.
LA ilaha illa lah
It will be noted that the testimony begins with a negation "LA ilaha illa lah"(there's no god but God) - a denial that naythig other than the one God is worthy of worship.
This negation is necessary in order that the positive affirmation which follows should be correctly understood.
Firstly, this statement makes it clear that pure monotheism involves the rejection of beloev in any other deity but the Supreme being.
Secondly, it disposes of all pagan association and superstitions.
Thirdly,it clears away the error of the past which may have crept into people's believe about God and, in this brief statement, provides against the re-emergence :there's nothing of any kind entitle to be worshipped except God(Allah)
Allah says of himself in surah 112 of the quran(al-ikhlaas)
"say:he's the one God,
God the eternal, the I caused.
Cause of all being.
He beget not, nor is he begotten, and there's nothing that could be compare with him."
The oneness of God is affirmed in many other verses of the Quran, for example :
" and your God is the one God:there's no deity save him, the most gracious, the most merciful" (Quran 2:163)
"Allah - there's no deity save him, the ever-living the self-subsistent fount of AL beings..." ( Quran 2:225)
Believe in the unity and oneness of God is the cornerstone of Islamic belief, and therfore comprises the first half of testimony of faith.
