How the Ridiculously Hilarious Johnjay & Rich Radio Show Will Strengthen Your Relationship

If you’ve never heard Johnjay & Rich’s hilarity, I recommend starting to listen to their show with your significant other.

A great time to talk about potential relationship problems is when both people are totally calm and laughing at a radio show, not when the problem actually comes up.

So, what’s the deal with these radio segments?

In a nutshell, listeners submit their relationship problems and 104.7 KISS FM will decide who to bring on and interview. After the listener shares their story on the air, Johnjay & Rich (and Kyle) call the other person and try to resolve the problem. Each week, they do five, 10-15 minute segments:

  • Monday Machaca: This segment is for any problems that don’t fall under the other four categories. Usually, the Machaca has nothing to do with romantic relationships. Depending on the situation, they might just flat-out ask what happened, or sometimes come up with a contest/story to get the information.
  • 2nd Date Update: As they say, “The first date was literally the best time you’ve ever had, then... why wasn’t there a second?” On this segment, they call the person you had a 1st date with and coax them into explaining the real reason they don’t want a 2nd date.
  • Humpday Dump Day: Someone dumped you and you don’t believe the real reason, so they call your ex and find out what really happened. Johnjay usually pretends he’s setting them up on a radio version of The Bachelor.
  • War of the Roses: There are signs your significant other is cheating on you. Kyle calls the person pretending to give out a dozen free, romantic roses to see who they’ll send them to and what they’ll write on the card.
  • Fiance Friday: After getting engaged, you are suspicious your fiance isn’t being faithful. Kyle calls the person pretending to give out a free his-and-hers romantic side-by-side massage to see who they’ll take.

Some say it’s morally questionable.

And I’d have to agree with them. Johnjay, Rich, and Kyle usually have to spin a fake story to encourage the truth out of the person; however, they do end up helping fix or mend relationships and help people who are legitimately being cheated on. Plus, it’ll probably have you crying with laughter. Johnjay is random, absurd, and hilarious.

It’s actually an interesting relationship-building opportunity.

By listening to the relationship problems that other people deal with, it gives you and your significant other an opportunity to talk about those things together.

  • What do you think about what just happened?
  • Do you agree with how things went down?
  • What would you do differently if you were in their shoes?
  • What if this came up in our relationship?
  • How would you solve this problem together?
  • Is this a communication issue or an incompatibility issue? (Does it apply to us?)

You’d be surprised how many productive conversations will come from these segments.

My boyfriend (@shenanigator) and I have been listening to Johnjay and Rich together for six months. Today we just celebrated our 8-month-iversary and the relationship is as strong as ever. These segments continue to bring up issues neither of us would have thought to talk about, but many will likely surface in the course of the relationship.

These shows will likely show weak points in your relationship.

Without discussion early on, these (potentially minor) weaknesses will turn into bigger problems down the road. The fact is, if you’re going to disagree with your partner now, it’s better to know (and find a solution) or end things before more time is invested in an incompatible relationship. It might seem scary, but open communication is the key to a healthy, happy relationship.
