RE: Engaged Listening as a Paradigm Shift
hello sister!
looks like we are the new kids on the block and “arriving” at the same time. nothing is a coincidence. i just love your work and definitely need more guidance on this topic. i was first introduced to active or compassionate listening in communication in 2014 and have slowly been working on it. the subject came up in the workplace and is very much contradictory to nyc lifestyle that i was conditioned to while growing up in the workplace. sharky. people have become much more sensitive and truthfully much more aligned to who my soul truly is. these points you bring up are very helpful for me and i appreciate you sharing your experience. i will keep this post handy since it is a great tool in the work i do if i end up going back into an office atmosphere. of course my goal is to finish my masters in social work and continue my medicine training with my tribes. have land and be sustainable. blessings to you and i look forward to chatting, talking, maybe meeting you someday. i keep getting the feeling that i will physically meet many tribal members. intuition kicking in ...
a’oo,

I hear you about workplaces being difficult spaces into which to bring engaged listening. I think this is partly because many offices seem to be places where love, care, emotion, and other parts of ourselves vital to relationship are actively checked at the door. I wonder why that is.
This reminds me of a favorite professor of mine, who managed to create a classroom experience unlike any other by the way that she communicated with and held space and attentiveness for her students. She modeled empathy, sincere presence, and deep listening, creating a space where everyone else took cues from her, and her classroom became a place where people felt safe and valued. She definitely reminded me that it's possible to create pockets of respect and care within environments that aren't conducive to those things, which is something I aspire to.
So nice to share space with you here! I wish you the best as you work toward your degree. :)
