It's the culture of most of the South Asian nation and India is a major one where you will find that, the women or the family of the bride have to pay dowry to the groom family to get married. It is a common culture here. Sounds obvious!! But it's the truth still in this 21st century.

There are many reasons behind this cultural practice. One of the major is- Male are more valued here than women. So the parents want dowry for their valued one from the undervalued female parents. Otherwise women will left unmarried. And as marriage is like a mandatory thing here, so they have no other options.

Another thing is- women are less educated or uneducated. So they have to depend on their husband and their family for living. So it's like carrying another women who can not earn anything, so they claim dowry.

This culture is very unfair, wrong for he society but still people follow this. Because women considerably get less property from the father's family. So their family try to give gold ornaments and dowry at a time in marriage.

There are many other issues related to it. It is very hard to get rid of this culture. Parents still believe in these and women have to go through this as they have a few alternatives. Otherwise they have to tolerate torture of the husband and their family for dowry. You will find many abuse and divorce cases because of the un-payment of dowry. So yeah, still women or her family of India have to pay dowry to get married.
