Buju Banton - Steppa Official video + [Review & Lyrics]
Buju Banton has been on a roll since his release with a slew of hits. Just about 24hrs ago he released the official video for Steppa. His first video in 10 years ✨
In this song we hear the true Gargamel rusty voice fans are familiar with. The song sets to redefine the meaning of the word “Steppa” which in Dancehall culture means Gangsta. Buju paints a different definition by stating that a Steppa in these times is one who steps towards progress whether it be home or abroad. I personally like how he says step in MeriMakka ( meaning America- but with thorns- Makka- means thorns).
The video starts off with scenes in the Blue Mountain where tribal men are stepping through the hills, crawling to a better way. In my eyes they represent the African defendants who stepped to freedom in Jamaica in days past. They represent the Maroons who stepped to the hills to escape the chains of slavery. The video then goes to scenes of modern Dancehall times, Shotta life, dancing. Then a scene we see quite often in today’s Dancehall videos, a drive up gunning where individuals jump out a car with high powered weapons turning on the heat. While this is gong on Buju is in a ritual with the tribes men , not obeah ( voodoo) but a spiritual blessing of guidance and protection. The Gargamel then appears on the crime scene and intervenes taking the guns from the “steppas”. ( Don’t try that in real life Buju).
This is an excellent video that I will be watching a couple times well.

Love his hardcore style, gotta be in the right kinda mood though
Yeah it’s a different side to the islands, the yin to the yang . This is the type of music that attracts a different type of tourism. Like the Japanese, they will go places you and I can’t venture to, soak it all in , come back with a street cred and up their prices for DJing or dancing.

Thanks for viewing, Buju is really big in Regge music. It is interesting to see what he will be up to next.
I can't wait to see where Buju's career goes from here. We missed his last show on the Long Walk to Freedom Tour in Suriname, arriving here almost a month too late, but we certainly would've gone if we'd made it here in time.
For real, it is gonna be interesting to watch. I wonder what the Rock Nation collaboration will bring. These things usually don't really work out well for Reggae/Dancehall acts but lets see what Jay-Z can do partnering with a living legend.

Hmm. I don't know about this one, I was expecting a soulful reflective first video post-release. I haven't listened to all the tracks he's produced since getting out of prison, but I hope he sings about and addresses his experiences over the last several years.
