Sitting Rock and The Log Cabin

The darkness of the hallway leading to “The Log Cabin” was abruptly interrupted by the flapping of door of the well lit army tent leading to a barrel wood stove. A enlighted space with the smell of sawdust and awe sweet warmth. The Log Cabin and Sitting Rock held our bathrooms. These Luxury spaces were well manned and guarded. These were not typical camping bathrooms or port-a-johns but stalls set up in an old army tent for composting toilets which must be monitored and compost bags changed frequently. The toilets were simply 5 gallon buckets in a box. It was simple to change out the full bags and send out of camp for the purpose of composting. Lively conversations were insured in taking a shift in Sitting Rock. The job was to make sure that everyone’s experience was enjoyable and clean. Sitting Rock became the social hub of camp with the warm wood stove and happy attendants composting prayer filled poop. Bathroom attendants were brought warm meals and thermoses full of coffee and provided plenty of solar power for the lighting of the place. The inspiration of ideas for more earth friendly energy discussed and debated, songs created, meetings of minds and sometimes unlikely new friendships formed in the army tent known as Sitting Rock. After a ¼ mile trudge in thick snow and ice to get the bathroom arriving to the wood stove and the attendants was a blessing. Who would want to Leave? The warmth of this place and walk back out in the whipping wind and freezing breathe.
