Song of the Day - Haydn - Schumann 1st movement from 1st violin sonata
This is my submssion for @recordpool, Song of the Day.
The first Schumann violin sonata holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first pieces that I played together with my future girlfriend, who later became my wife. Fond memories!
This particular performance is by the Italian violinist, Fabio Bondi (and Luigi di Ilio on fortepiano). One of my favourite Baroque violinists, as leader of Europa Galante he is a divisive figure in the field of Early Music. However, it is his recordings to introduced me to the joy of playing music with an eye to the historical context of the compositions.
Oddly enough, Robert Schumann was quite displeased with his own competition. He was noted as saying that he hoped the next sonata would be much better than this one...
