How to make Traditional Eggnog SOOOOOO good! :D

in #recipes7 years ago

One of my favorite things to have during the holidays is EGGNOG.
Not that gross stuff from the store. That stuff is not eggnog. I'm not really sure what it is...

REAL Eggnog made at home with REAL ingredients!

My husband is the designated 'Eggnog Maker", because I think he likes being the guy known for making awesome eggnog, but anyone can make this. It's pretty easy.

I would give credit to the recipe creator, but I don't know who it is! We found this recipe online years ago, copied it down, and used it ever since.

Traditional Eggnog

Ingredients:

  • 12 large egg whites
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 12 egg yolks
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 7 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups light rum
  • 1 cup whiskey
  • dash nutmeg

Disclaimer!
I have never made the alcoholic version of this! I have no idea how it tastes with all that alcohol!
If someone tries it with, please let me know how it turns out!

We make it according to instructions, without the alcohol, and it is yummy! Kinda like a milkshake!

Directions:

  • You will need 3 med to large bowls.
  • In the first bowl, beat egg whites until they start to thicken.
  • Add 1 cup sugar, beat until thick.
  • In the second bowl, beat egg yolks and salt until thick.
  • Combine beated egg whites with yolks and beat until mixed and thick.
  • In a third bowl, beat cream until it starts to thicken.
  • Add two tbsp sugar and vanilla to beaten cream.
  • Add milk, rum, and whiskey, beating continually (for non-alcoholic eggnog, omit the alcohol and add artificial rum flavor adding a tsp at a time until achieving the desired taste.) We don't use rum flavor at all.
  • Combine all ingredients, and chill.
  • Serve with a garnish and a sprinkle of nutmeg on top of each glass.

This is a favorite at our house.

When people come over for the holidays, they always ask for it.

NOTE
I am a big fan of using healthy ingredients!
I realize eggnog is not really a health-food, BUT there are some ways you can make it better for you.
We use farm fresh eggs from our hens. Fresh milk from our goats. Pink salt and homemade vanilla from actual beans.
I wish I had a cream separator so I could use my own cream too, but oh well, maybe someday.
Also, I use unrefined cane sugar instead of white.
Small changes like these can make it much better for you as it will contain trace minerals, vitamins, and enzymes that are not found in the refined versions.
Either way you make it, though, it is delicious!
Enjoy!
