Making My First Stromboli
Back in the day, we had a chain pizzeria called Pizza Inn in our town. I'm not a big pizza fan and I always thought their pizza smelled like feet, but I always found comfort and stability in their ham and cheese stromboli.
What is a stromboli? According to the Wikipedia Gods, "Stromboli is a type of turnover filled with various cheeses and cold cuts or vegetables. The dough used is either Italian bread dough or pizza dough. Stromboli was invented in the United States in the 1950s."
The restaurant closed probably about 10 years ago, but my craving for pizza dough with ham, Canadian bacon, shredded cheese, bell pepper, and onion has never waned. Last night, I'd had enough. PMS was hitting hard and I just HAD to have a ham and cheese stromboli, so I made my own!
First I waited an hour and a half for my bread machine (I'm spoiled) to make my dough. I hate that it takes so long, but the dough is delicious. After I got my dough, I rolled it as flat and as round as I could get it.
Next I put two to three layers of deli ham. I don't recommend using honey ham for this. That's what I did and it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. It's a bit too sweet. Next time I'll be sure to use regular super-thin sliced ham.
I also put on a layer of bell pepper (I grow both green and orange) and onions. Next was a layer of cheddar cheese and a layer of mozzarella cheese.
I folded the dough in half, sealed it around the edges, brushed on some garlic butter, and popped it into a 450 degree F oven.
20 minutes later and it was done! I cut it into pieces and fed it to my biggest critics, the minions.
They liked it!!! My son, the oldest, is the only one who can really remember Pizza Inn and my version met with his approval. The youngest ate more than she usually does, and when my middle got back from Wednesday night church, she almost cried about missing the taste-testing!
This is all that was left after we finished stuffing ourselves. It was really good and definitely deserves a repeat performance after the husband gets back from his Red Cross deployment.
Thanks for looking and stay tuned!
yyuummyyyy and tasty and i am very hungry.
I will share! Haha!
Mmmmm.... Stromboli... haha, looks like it turned out great! I’ve made them at home too and done different variations on the fillings, but you can never go wrong with the classic ham and cheese!
You mean you've been making them and not sharing?! I'm appalled! Haha! ;)
Wow, that does look tasty.
I've never had (or even seen) a stromboli - I thought it was a volcano 😊
Must give this a try. Is it just standard yeasted bread or pizza dough you are using for it?
Standard pizza dough! Next time I'm going to brush olive oil on it instead of butter. Butter with garlic powder gets grainy and kind of gross.
We used to brush the garlic butter on after it was cooked. Pretty much like a glaze.
Ohhh! I put it on first because I thought it would brown the crust better. It didn't work. I'll do it after next time. Thanks, Mel!
That looks freaking delicious. I need it in my life!
Why can’t we be neighbors???
Hahaha!! I could be the topless scary person on the zero turn mower and you can wander around your yard in your night gown.
😂😂😂
lookin yummy!
Happy Eve

When I was in school, the lunchroom would serve stromboli once or twice a year. EVERYBODY loved it! Pizza Inn's isn't bad either. I'll be homemade is even better!
It was pretty amazing. Our school never got anything cool like that. Haha!

STOPhaha -- I like your motto, "Comfort and Stability in a Stromboli!" That would be good for a restaurant or a food truck! That looks like a tasty stromboli, too! :D
Thanks, @haphazard-hstead! :)
You're welcome! Keep that bread machine going! :D
OMGoodness! I haven't had stromboli in ages!!!
There was this little restaurant up north where I used to live and they made THE BEST stromboli!!
Gonna add to my menu plan for next week!
good jobbie!! Looks wonderful! at least with a bread machine, you know your dough will rise. I made the worst pretzels yesterday that didn't raise properly. Still mad about it..... Looks wonderful!
I love your pretzels so much. I need them in my life.
